Building a Resilient Europe: Health Must Be a Primary Goal Not an Afterthought
On Monday, 23 September, AIM and our members had the privilege of a dynamic and insightful discussion with MEP Tilly Metz. The conversation was both timely and pivotal, centred on one powerful theme: for Europe to be truly resilient, health must be established as a primary strategic objective, not treated as a secondary item. The meeting served as an important platform to align on the top priorities that will shape a healthier future for all European citizens. Clear conclusions emerged:
Health must come first. Health can no longer be a by product of other policies. It must be proactively and centrally embedded across EU policymaking, backed by dedicated strategic funding. Our health systems need targeted investments rather than relying on leftovers from other budget lines.
Address the care workforce crisis. Europe faces a serious care crisis. We urgently need concrete, actionable EU level strategies to make care careers attractive and sustainable. That requires tangible measures to support, value, and retain our indispensable health workforce.
Innovation must serve people. True innovation in health is not about the spotlight; it is about ensuring every European receives the care they need. Innovation and accessibility are two sides of the same coin and must advance together. We innovate to serve people, not merely to push technological boundaries.
Secure long term investments in the EU budget. The Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) offers a critical opportunity. We must seize this moment to secure stable, long term investments in our health systems so they are prepared for future challenges and can deliver for generations to come.
Build on successes and ensure consistency. The success of initiatives like Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan shows the power of a coordinated EU approach. We must sustain this momentum and deliver robust implementation, including the forthcoming Cardiovascular Plan. Continuity and long term commitment are key to tangible health gains.
The discussion underscored that our path forward depends on steadfast collaboration, strong public health systems, and a shared commitment to a Europe that leaves no one behind. AIM warmly thanks MEP Tilly Metz for her time, deep insights, and consistent dedication to public health, and all AIM members who contributed to this enriching exchange.
Let’s carry this momentum forward. Together, we will continue to champion health systems that are truly people centred, accessible, and sustainable for everyone, turning words into actions that change lives.
