Solidarity is the Glue that Holds Society Together: AIM Marks 75th Anniversary

People are concerned about their future, and a natural reflex in times of uncertainty is often to choose self-interest and short-term solutions. Some politicians are very aware of this and exploit it in their election programmes and promises. However, choosing short-term gain and self-interest only makes problems worse. Even from the perspective of well-understood self-interest, solutions based on solidarity are better.

“Alone you go faster, together you go further, as the African proverb goes,” says Loek Caubo, president of AIM.

AIM, the international association of mutuals and not-for-profit health insurance funds, was founded 75 years ago. AIM and its members are committed to accessible and affordable healthcare and social security in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. Therefore, AIM has declared its 75th anniversary year as The Year of Solidarity, reflecting one of its core values. The anniversary conference, taking place today in Brussels, is entirely dedicated to this theme.

Solidarity guides AIM’s activities in Brussels and internationally. Specifically, AIM promotes fair pricing and availability of medicines, digitization of healthcare, and climate policies that put people at the centre.

Not-for-profit health insurance funds and mutuals are a vital vehicle for building accessible healthcare and social security across Europe and the world.
