Dutch Health insurers committed to improve Co-decision in Healthcare

05.10.2021

Beginning of September, the Dutch ‘Decide Together’ campaign started. It is an initiative of patient- and branch organisations from medical-specialist care, general practitioner care, paramedical care and district nursing. Zorgverzekeraars Nederland (ZN), member of AIM, supports this campaign. For the quality of care, health insurers consider it essential that patients decide together with their doctor on their treatment. According to research (2020) conducted by Kantar Public on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, at least a quarter of all patients find shared decision-making difficult. The study also found that 7 out of 10 healthproviders preselect treatment options, leaving clear room for improvement when it comes to patient involvement in decisions on their care. The ‘Decide Together’ campaign focuses, next to patients, also on at health professionals and -providers to help them improve their joint decision-making behaviour, with some sector-specific tips, flyers, posters and other tools for all care sectors.
